Two Neighborhoods Spared!

Long ago it was assumed that the neighborhoods on the east and west of the 101 freeway below Franklin Ave. had absolutely NO civic participation. Lately that situation has changed. With the help of the Franklin-Hollywood Hills Community Council – groups have now formed in both those areas and are using their collective voices to protect their neighborhoods:

Needle Exchange Canceled! Neighbors walked the streets, knocked on doors, made phone calls and sent faxes to tell the city and the Hollywood Free Clinic that their neighborhood could not tolerate one more social service – and the city heard them. See Councilman Garcetti’s letter posted to the FranklinHollywoodHills.org website.

The Hollywood-Gower Neighborhood Association was born and they are having weekly meetings at Q-topia (6021 Hollywood Blvd.) where businesses owners, residents and property owners discuss with city officials the challenges that exist in their neighborhood. These meetings are held on Tuesday nights at 7PM throughout the month of May. Monthly meetings will be planned thereafter. You are welcome to come and share in the discussion and solution/consensus building.

Fire Station 82 WILL NOT MOVE to Garfield/Gramercy/Hollywood Blvd! Neighbors joined together often over this issue, called and faxed downtown, and marched in protest over the placement of a Fire Station in their neighborhood. Their business community is becoming more vibrant every day. With the loss of frontage along Hollywood Blvd., there could have been no plans for revitalization. Now there are neighbors on both sides of Hollywood Blvd. as well as business and property owners meeting together to plan for this revitalization. The Eastwood Coalition was born out of this challenge and continues to meet monthly at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Hollywood on the First Tuesday of the month at 6PM – 7:30PM (1711 N. Van Ness at Hollywood Blvd.)

In a meeting of the Proposition F Fire Bond Administrative Oversight Committee, it was announced that the City Council has decided that this site was no longer to be considered for a location for Fire Station 82. The Prop F folks will not search for an alternative site for a 2-acre regional fire station to replace our Fire Station 82 currently located on Bronson south of Franklin Ave. They agree to bring representatives from these new organizations to the table as they search for alternative sites. The neighbors asked that whatever site is considered not be located far away from the current one and that NO response time should be lost for the Hollywood Hills. Remember that the service area for Fire Station 82 enjoys response time under 5 minutes, which is the LAFD goal – with the exception of the Hollywood Hills where response times are usually longer than 20 minutes.
