January 16, 2006 Hollywood Gower neighbors met with
Captain Ron Sanchez on Monday 1-16-06 to discuss escalating violence, drug
trafficking, graffiti, burglaries, and more occurring between Hollywood
& Sunset, Gower & Bronson. Captain Sanchez instructed
Detective/Sergeant Michael Ventura of the Hollywood Crime Impact Team to
create a presence on Carlton Way, make arrests and basically take control
of the environment for a short period of time. Sanchez shared with us that his
recent redeployment of Senior Lead Officers. The fact that the
Hollywood-Gower Neighborhood’s SLO is on maternity leave has a serious
impact on crime prevention in this area. He will have Armen Sevdahlian
spend some time in the Carlton Way, Hollywood Blvd, Gower, and Bronson
neighborhoods. Sgt. Ventura gave a demonstration
of how the video surveillance operation works and gave tips on how the
neighbors can deal with trespassers, property owners, and the value of
reporting crimes and sightings. Sgt Ventura will create a meeting
soon with Det. Lt. Wally Hull, SLO Sevdahlian, Sgt Duane Aikens (Gang
Unit), Officer Joe Bunch, Kerry Morrison (Hollywood BID), Bill Kysella
(City Attorney’s office), and the five neighborhood representatives in
attendance with Captain Sanchez. This will be for strategy building and
creating an action plan to take care of the sources of the difficulty –
gang presence, irresponsible multi-unit property owners, social services
with no oversight, etc. In addition, the community leaders
asked that a video camera be installed to add to the police surveillance
program working so well in Hollywood right now. The community expressed
willingness to purchase this camera if the police will add it to their
existing monitoring system. Fran and Lily will meet with Kerry Morrison to
get the specifics. Also, Captain Sanchez plans to
request My Friends Place to get 24/7 on site security to minimize the
negative impact that their operation has on the neighborhood. One neighbor asked that Captain
Sanchez have his patrol watch the alley behind the liquor store on Bronson
& Gower because he has witnessed drug dealing there. Meanwhile, Councilman Eric
Garcetti has been invited to be the special guest at the first
Hollywood-Gower Neighborhood Association Meeting on Wednesday, January
25th at 7 p.m. at the Music Box Theatre. It’s
suggested that we step up our community education regarding the value of
reporting crime or suspicious activity on the phone when it happens.
877-ASK LAPD is a good non-emergency number. We hope to see you all there! Fran |
