Hollywood-Gower Neighborhood Association

June 30, 2004 Meeting Report

Crime: Senior Lead Officer Maria was not present. Rumor has it that she is out on medical leave. The neighbors were puzzled at the lack of police presence in their meetings over the last few months. The neighborhood prosecutor was also not present and had not responded to the invitation to the meeting. Fran said that she would try to get answers for this neighborhood group as there are drug-dealing tenants in the neighborhood and other issues that need to be addressed.

Surveillance Camera Report: Jordan reported that Officer Hamilton hasn’t responded. The plan was for Hamilton to organize a meeting of the entire local interested community members and/or groups to discuss the placement of and funding for cameras in our area. Jordan will try again to get an update from Hamilton.

Neighborhood Cleanup Report: Fran reported that the Carlos/Bronson cleanup was a success. The neighbors said that the streets are, so far, very tidy as a result of the many cleanup projects that this group has conducted. It was decided that we would take July off (regarding cleanup projects) and conduct a cleanup in August if needed.

Quality of Life Issues:

John Stock mentioned that the Joe’s Garage, Inc. truck is now parked at the overpass. Fran was wondering where it had gone. The truck is an eyesore and blight. Since it is officially a business vehicle (Joe’s Garage, Inc.), the laws are clear that it cannot be parked on the neighborhood streets for extended periods of time. The city can legally tow such a vehicle if it hasn’t moved in 72 hours without the need for a citation. Fran said that she would suggest that the Hollywood Police finally take this vehicle off the Hollywood streets. (Remember that SLO Maria told us that this same vehicle was in the Hollywood BID area but they would not tolerate it and now it is in our area…)

One neighbor mentioned that the Free Clinic overpass was an encampment for homeless people. They have a subculture and a community of their own right in plain sight and it’s bringing this area of Hollywood down. Jordan has a good relationship with the clinic and will ask them if they have signed the document that gives officers permission to clear private land of squatters.

Al asked about the local mini-mart’s idea for a beer and wine license. Jordan said that the owner would be at our next meeting to share what he will be doing to increase security around his operation after getting the license.

Meeting was adjourned. Next meeting Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at 7PM at Q-Topia, 6021 Hollywood Blvd.
