2/25/04 Meeting Report

 Crime Report

(Senior Lead Office Maria could not make the meeting) In general, crime is down. Helen said that there are gangsters hanging out at an apartment building near her home. Jordon says that gangsters have become more vocal and violent lately – he found several kids smoking crack in his alcove – he called the police and they never came.

We discussed the need for better outreach regarding meeting announcements. Jordon asked for the membership list so he can make calls prior to the next meeting. It would be good to have food at the next meeting – perhaps even dinner catered. In our next meeting we will discuss creating a system of outreach to get others involved.

Fire Station 82

Joel said that the HUNC board voted to support the relocation of Fire Station 82 at the Florentine Gardens property. Missy says that a Fire Station in this part of Hollywood Blvd. makes sense for the community. Fran will make a general statement from the neighbors regarding the value of having Fire Station 82 in the neighborhood when she visits the Prop F Admin Oversight Committee meeting tomorrow.

Bill Buerge suggested that we discuss this issue with Kay Tornborg and Robert Nudelman of Hollywood Heritage.

Little Country Church of Hollywood

Missy gave a little background. A neighbor said that it was built in 1934 by a preacher, remained in family ownership for a while – Pantages was in escrow with it at one time and wanted to tear it down for a parking lot. Susan Fine Moore owned it for a while and planned to build a restaurant on the property. The city placed so many conditions on her plans that she ended up selling the property. She sold it to David Judaken who is developing a whole set of plans that have been approved. All he has to do is pull permits. Cultural Heritage got a hold of the plans with regard to the knotty pine removal that they wanted to do. The plans were sent back to redo the permits. He sold to Konce (a doctor in San Francisco). Judaken is now a tenant moving ahead with the plans with authority to develop the property. The red flag on his plans are the 22 Toilets/urinals under the church (this provides for 800 to 1000 people. One neighbor said that they recently went to a huge restaurant that seats 500 and it had a total of 10 toilets/urinals and it was a new restaurant. This sounds like the makings of something much larger.

HUNC voted unanimously to send Garcetti a letter requesting a meeting.

The group gave the go-ahead to send a letter asking to be included in such a meeting and in discussions regarding the Little Country Church of Hollywood. Fran brought a draft letter and it way okay’d with some changes.

Homeless Outreach

Jordon said that working with homeless needs to be done through organizations rather than one on one. (Hollywood Heart Foundation) He would like to explore using Q-Topia as a place to put on charity events.

Blood Donors Needed at Children’s Hospital

Missy mentioned the desperate need for blood & platelet donations at the Children’s Hospital. She asked if Jordon would like to sponsor a blood drive. They will work together to make this happen.
