Eastwood
Coalition July 6,
2004 Meeting Report Crime Report: Armen
Sevdalian Crime Alert: Burglary
spike in the Eastwood neighborhood has residents on the alert for a male
gypsy. His operating fashion is to approach old people at their homes
saying that he has lost his dog. He then ventures into their yard, in the
door, and leaves with their property. He’s rather scruffy looking. Home Burglaries are up.
It’s summer and people behave differently by keeping their doors and
windows open and unlocked to let the cool air in. The aggravated assaults
and robberies in the area are because of the gang presence. The Police
Captain is working with the City Attorney to get an injunction against
White Fence. Then we will see a drop in crime. The first Tuesday in
August is National Night Out Against Crime. Central Hollywood Neighborhood
Council will be providing the food. There is a Community
Police Academy for Adults coming up. This eleven-week academy will take
place starting in September and take place on Thursdays with a graduation
in November. This Academy teaches people the inner workings of the police
department. One must fill out an application in order to attend. Only 15
reps will be allowed from each precinct. The application can be found on
our website (www.FranklinHollywoodHills.org). The Police department is
giving away Child Safety gun locks. All you have to do is sign a waver for
the police. CRA – Developer’s
proposals: John McCoy John outlined the simple,
transparent process that will be attempted as we go forward to the
selection of an appropriate developer for this project. He will be calling
together individual reps from the various community organizations, the CRA,
City Council, etc. in order to present questions to each individual
developer. We will gather to discuss what we have heard and what we need
in order to go forward. Ideally, we will be reaching a consensus as a
representative panel and that will help the CRA make their final decision.
This is the most open this process has ever been. A forming neighborhood
council rep suggested that all the groups meet together and create a
spreadsheet outside the process that the CRA has outlined. This idea was
not adopted. The Eastwood Coalition formed its own internal committee in
order to send out a comprehensive list of questions to the CRA to be
forwarded to each developer. Chris Dye, Cindy Duhaime, KC Schmidt, Josh
Bearman, Nancy Brown, Pierre Kuntz and Fran Reichenbach will meet together
as the Eastwood Coalition Committee to discuss the RFP. Russell Brown from HUNC
made an effort to get the group to agree to create a committee with reps
from each of the neighborhood councils. This idea was not adopted as the
Eastwood Coalition has its own committee with its own voice. It was
suggested that the process that John McCoy outlined be adhered to and that
we all allow the transparent process that the CRA was directing to
proceed. The Eastwood Coalition Committee is formed to gather local
neighborhood consensus and send that on to the CRA as requested by John
McCoy. Fire Station 82 Fran said that the EIR was
still in process but that it looks like the Fire Station is definitely
going to be built on the West side of the 101 Freeway. Whole Foods The Design Review
Committee will meet next week with Ira, Whole Foods, Bond, and Renee
Weitzer at St. Francis. Dave Monks says that Panda
Express and US Bank have signed a lease to go into the Metro station. He
suggests that we all take a look at the property at Delongpre and Sunset
as it would make a better location for Whole Foods. Cindy volunteered to
circulate flyers for our next meeting. She also wants to slow traffic down
on Garfield and is interested in getting speed humps placed. KC suggested we consider
having a different Mayoral candidate come to each of our monthly meetings
as we get closer to the elections. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 |
