How short and how often should I clip my dogs’ (St.Bernard & Lab) nails?
My 4 year old St. Bernard has claws/nails that don’t look entirely healthy. The dead nail seems to separate from the living quick (whatever it’s called) as it grows. I worry that he is in pain as the nail looks like it entombs the quick (the dark fleshy part that would hurt if I clipped it) and prevents it from growing properly. When I adopted him the nails were in much worse shape. I’ve clipped them and they now look much better but they never look as good as my Lab’s nails.
My 3 year old Lab has nails that look in perfect health except they’re too long. She does a tap dance whenever she walks on the hardwood floors. My problem is that the quick is very close to the end of the nail so even when I clip her not very much length is removed. The bigger problem is that she won’t stay still long enough for me to position the clippers and feel comfortable that I’m not going to hurt her.
Filing your dogs nails 2x a week will make thier Quicks draw back a little bit at a time. Its a long process and not always easy to train your pet to let u use an acrylic fingernail file or a dremmel. If your nervous, your dog knows it and will be MORE nervous. If it’s too hard, I suggest taking them to a groomer. You can usually just walk in and get them clipped and filed on the spot for 5-15 bucks. Good luck!
