Eastwood Coalition 5/03/05 Meeting Report 7:00 p.m. I. Crime Report A. $1000 Reward for info on graffiti violators (handout) B. August Neighborhood event to clean up the streets (handout) C. Cindy – fight occurred near Starbucks recently in HWD/WSTN development. Police are aware of the problem. Private security personnel are responsible to address the problem because it is private property. Management needs to take the lead and hire more or staff more security. Police can only respond to reported crime not merely the presence of intimidating persons. D. 1717 N Grammercy Pl. (Btwn HWD/FKLN) - Continuation school students are migrating into the neighborhood and tagging. Graffiti is primarily from juvenile gang members. E.
Residents should call 911 if they see tagging in progress but not
simply to report it after the fact. II.
May 14 – Community gathering at Metro Station (SE corner of HWD/WSTN) III. Historical Presentation A. Biograpies of Marc Wannamaker and Robert Nudelman B. Presentation C. Zoning issues 1. Sidewalks will probably be shrinking more and more rather than increasing the setback. 2.
Neighborhood should be involved in creating agreements with city
and developers to enforce graffiti abatement measures and other
riders/policies. IV. Zoning Issues A. CRA meeting tomorrow night (05/04/05) at MTA community room HWD/WSTN Station B. Thurs (05/05/05) 8 a.m. Spring Street CRA Board meeting to review and approve new design for the HWD/VINE legacy project. C. Housing shortage is a function of the affordability gap between development cost and maximum rents that residents can afford D. Signage has been a motivating factor for developers to finance construction. Market may be oversold. E. Variances are being issued with greater frequency than may be desirable because neighborhoods are not actively opposing variances and developers have many incentives to work outside of current zoning. |
